Your stomach growled, reminding you that you hadn’t eaten at all today. Winter was approaching, making itself known as it gnawed at your cold red nose and shaking legs. You rather enjoyed the cold, but even you had your limits. The icy tendrils of the encroaching season crept onto your flesh, chilling you to the bones. For the most part you ignored the cold, focusing on other things to distract you. Your (e/c) eyes swept across the bare forest, noticing the three or four little leaves still clinging to the dying limbs of the trees, stubbornly refusing to give in to the persistent winter’s grasp.

As you walked along, the frost cloaked grass below your feet crunched with each step, stabbing at your bare feet. Besides the hissing of the wind, the forest was quite tranquil. However, the sudden ‘snap!’ of a twig behind you broke your concentration on the lonely forest, making your heart leap in fearful alarm. You squatted down, snatching up a sharp branch and whipping your body, along with the twig, around, aiming it threateningly at your stalker.

“Whah!” he exclaimed, throwing his arms in the air in an ‘I surrender!’ pose. It was a young boy! He had a startled expression on his face, his muscles tensed and his eyes stretched wide as the stick breezed by his nose, only just missing. You blinked and lowered your ‘weapon’, frowning at him. He had dirty blonde hair and beautiful ocean blue eyes, and resting atop his head was what appeared to be a cowlick. You’d never seen this boy before. ‘He must not be from the orphanage’, you thought to yourself, eying him warily. A small twinge of envy struck you as you gazed his warm-looking clothing, consisting of a bulky coat with a fur-crested hood, a scarf, and fur-lined boots. You shivered again as it reminded you as to how cold you really were.

“What do you want?” You asked, your breath crystallizing the instant it left your mouth.

“Uh... I was just on my way back home.” The boy replied, his ocean blue eyes wide with curiosity. “Wait, are you alone?” He pondered, gazing around the empty forest in search of said others. You narrowed your eyes, hesitating.

“...Yeah. You responded, unsure if you should have just told him that little bit of information. There was a silence...

“WHOA!” He exclaimed again, suddenly fired up. “You must be like one of those super awesome ninja-assassins! Using your young, innocent looks to lower your enemy’s guard, then striking when the time is right! You need to wear light clothing to be able to move swiftly and silently, which would explain the clothing, though I thought they wore black outfits... but you must-” He blabbered on, his nostrils flaring excitedly.

“Uh...” You interrupted, his words lost on you. “I’m... actually just an orphan from nearby here...” Your head was tilted, and you had an eyebrow raised doubtfully at the young boy’s enthusiasm. He stopped in the middle of his little speech, not all all expecting such a response, being too lost in his own silly fantasy.

“Huh? You’re... an orphan?” The blonde responded, quieting down. The pitiful look he was suddenly giving you made you tense defensively.

“Yeah. Why?” You retorted bitterly. He scanned you, only just now realizing that it wasn’t very likely that a ninja would be wearing such thin, torn up clothes. They were also baggy, for they were much too large for you.

“Oh... I used to be an orphan too.” He remarked, setting his hand on his waist.

“Seriously?” You never expected someone as excitable as him to have been an orphan.

“Yeah!” There was a silence as the wind kicked up, whipping itself against your already weakened legs. Without warning, your legs gave out beneath you, making you gasp as you crumpled to the ground.

“Who, dude! Are you okay??” He rushed over to you, clueless as to why you suddenly fell to the ground.

“....I’m ....f-fine...” You breathed, your teeth chattering together, moving sluggishly in an attempt to stand up again. The blue-eyed boy fretted and reached over, touching your arm to help you up and suddenly recoiling in alarm.

“You’re as cold as ice!” He proclaimed, his round eyes large with worry.

“Don’t w-worry... about m-me... I’m fine!” You stammered, hugging yourself in an attempt to keep yourself warm.

“Hey.” He demanded, the sudden sternness in his voice causing you to look up into his eyes, surprised. “You’re gonna freeze if you stay out here any longer.” He insisted. A sudden warmth surrounded you as he wrapped his coat over your trembling figure, leaning down and motioning for you to get on his back. At first you hesitated, not wanting to make it easy for him due to pride. Finally, you gave in with a sigh and wrapped your arms around his neck. He held your legs up to keep a good hold of you as he walked you to his home, your weary head resting on his shoulder.

By the time he reached his home with you, your body had become much warmer. You were so warm, in fact, that you’d fallen right to sleep. The boy glanced up, smiling, and he opened the door, sighing in relief as a wave of warmth welcomed him. Though you provided a bit of warmth for his back, he had given you his jacket, so he was still pretty chilled. The instant the door clicked shut, a blonde with thick eyebrows and messy hair came skidding out from the kitchen.

“You bloody idiot! I was worried sick about-” Seeing the girl on his back, sleeping soundly, his voice faltered.

“Arthur, Arthur! I found a girl in the woods, all on her own!”  With a cheesy grin, he added, “Can we keep her? Pleaaasseeee?” He begged.

“Alfred,” He sighed, placing his hand on his head exasperatedly, “you can’t take a girl and claim her as your own.”

“But... she was cold and alone...” Alfred whimpered, his eyes wavering sadly, pleading for Arthur to let her stay. Suddenly, you began to stir. Your eyes opened the slightest bit, and both of their eyes were on you, silent. Alfred placed you on the couch, sitting directly next to you. You rubbed your eyes, the nap satisfying only a small percentage of your sleepiness.

“ ‘Ello lass...” The blonde with the messy hair greeted, his emerald eyes locked on your (e/c) ones.

“H-hello? Who are you?” You asked, glancing around and relieved to find the boy who’d helped you sitting nearby.

“My name is Arthur... and it appears you’ve already met Alfred.” He observed with a thick British accent, indicating to the boy who’d rescued you.

“Yeah... my name’s (name).” You confirmed, flicking the corners of your lips up in a little smile, Alfred grinning back with a little ‘heh’. “He actually saved me out there... I probably would have frozen to death if it weren’t for him.” You explained, feeling grateful. Arthur processed this, noticing the proud, bright glimmering in his eyes.

“Well... that was very gracious of you Alfred. However, I ought to return you to your home now that you’re okay.” That comment hit you like a blow to the gut.

“You see... I...” You looked away, stung, “...I don’t have a home... or parents.” Arthur instantly covered his mouth, realizing how unintentionally insensitive his comment was.

“O-oh... ah, sorry, love... I’m sorry to hear that.” He apologized, guilt nabbing at him.

“It’s fine.” You replied simply, forgiving him.

“Arthur...” Alfred whispered, his face hopeful as he poked at him. After some hesitation, he finally gave in with a deep sigh.

“Alright. She can stay here with us.” You eyes widened, Alfred jumping to his feet with a cheer, and practically tackling you. You squeaked, tumbling over.

“Alfred! Let her rest, she’s probably had a long day.” The British man ordered, scolding him. You giggled, hugging your new friend back.

“Let’s go upstairs!” Alfred proclaimed excitedly, grabbing your arm and practically dragging you up the flight of stairs. His strength surprised you, for he easily pulled you up the stairs without losing a single breath. Sure, you were light due to your small food portions, but it was still impressive. Arthur muttered, shaking his head and ranting things like ‘never listens’ and ‘bloody rambunctious child’ as he turned, flouncing into the kitchen.

You and Alfred flew up the remaining stairs, shoving open to door to his bedroom as he pulled you in with him. His room was certainly warm and cozy, but it was a bit of a mess. There were superhero magazines strewn about his bed and floor, with a medium-sized T.V. on the wall along with a few video game systems, including a gameboy advanced. Your mouth gaped, never seeing so many electronic gaming devices before gathered together in one room. Then again, being raised in an orphanage, you’d never really gotten a chance to play any either. The only thing you did in your freetime was draw and write on occasion, listening to music as you did so.

Alfred gave you a beaming grin.

“Impressed?” He asked. “I’ve got everything that’s come out so far!” He explained, smiling broadly.

“Whoa! There’s so many!” You gasped.

“Heheh! The newer games are cool, but there’s an older game here that I think’s always gonna be my favorite though!” Alfred began rummaging through the mess of video games and grinning triumphantly as he raised his hand, revealing Mario Kart. Quickly, he popped the game into his Nintendo 64 system and handed you a controler, grinning eagerly at you. The beginning screen popped up, and he clicked through a few options, choosing the easiest course he could find.

“Alright, so this button here is the acceleration button. It drives you forward.” He explained, pointing out a button on the right side of the controller. You pressed the button a few times and then nodded.

“Okay, then what?” Alfred gave you the basic explanation of what every button did. Your brain struggled to catch up, but you absorbed everything that you could. Lakitu floated down, holding up the lights. Red...red...... green! For some reason, your car swiveled back and forth, puffing out a black cloud.

‘Huh?” You wondered, confused. Alfred laughed slightly, suddenly remembering.

“Oh yeah, I forgot to mention! You should press the gas a few seconds after the second red light. Then you get a boost.” Your eyebrows furrowed together with concentration as you kart putted ahead. Slowly, you gained speed and had begun to catch up. Hours passed, and gradually you had begun to get better and better. Alfred cheered you on with each course, and soon you had been often taking second or third place. The room grew darker as the sun slid down the horizon, when finally, Al paused the game, the stench of smoke reaching his nostrils, the fire alarm going off moments later.

“Must be dinner time.” Alfred thought out loud, standing up and letting out a deep breath as he stretched his stiff legs. You groaned, stretching as well. He led you back down the stairs, you wrinkling your nose at the smell.

“Is something burning?” You asked.

“Probably.” Al replied. You both arrived in the kitchen, welcomed by a swearing Arthur. You both watched him silently as he turned off the burners and tossed what looked like charcoal into the trash can and reached up to turn on the fan. He pressed the button on the alarm, silencing the piercingly loud noise at last. As Arthur turned around, he had a flustered expression, combing his fingers halfway through his messy hair. He noticed the two of you, smiling sheepishly.

“Well... maybe you two should just have some cereal or oatmeal.” Alfred murmured a simple ‘alright’ and meandered over to the cupboards, reaching for the little metal knob of a handle. He managed to open the door, but the bag of cereal was perched at the very top, well out of his reach.

“Here, I’ll get it for-” Arthur began, but Alfred cut him off.

“I’ve got it, just... hang on...” The young boy grunted with effort, gripping the handle. Just as he was about to pull himself up, the whole door was ripped off of the hinges with a loud ‘CRACK!’. You squeaked in alarm, jumping back as splinters of wood exploded from the broken door. Alfred fell backwards and Arthur ran over, barely catching him in time, gagging as the surprisingly heavy young boy- considering how slim yet strong he looked-  landed on him. You just watched with your eyes wide. After a moment, Al began laughing.

“Y-you bloody wanker, what’s so funny??” Arthur puffed, lifting him up and setting him down beside himself as he got up and dusted himself off. This only made the young boy laugh harder, holding his stomach. Unable to resist, you began to giggle as well. It was contagious! Arthur gave you a look that said “You too?!” After a full minute or two, the laughter died down and the British man shook his head with a wide smile.

“Ah... What am I to do with you two?” He sighed with amusement ringing in his tone. Reaching up, he pulled down the bag of cereal, pouring it into bowls and spilling some milk into it. The simple dinner didn’t take very long to finish, you wolfing down your food almost as quickly as Alfred. You chatted afterward, conversing with your new family members cheerfully. When Arthur turned to glance at the clock, he gasped. 11:57!

“It’s late, you both need to get to bed!” He exclaimed, hastily getting you out of your seats and ushering you both up the stairs. As you reached the first door to the left, the door was swung open and, revealing a familiar room. You all filtered inside as Al hopped into his bed.

“Alfred, your room is a mess...” The British man observed with a deep exhale of exasperation. He leaned down, planting a quick kiss goodnight on the young boy’s forehead before heading back for the door. You shuffled over, your face turning a faint shade of pink at the thought of kissing him. Hesitating, you waited before finally kissing his cheek quickly, turning and scampering out of the room. Alfred felt a fluttering in his stomach and a smile reappeared on his face.

“Goodnight, (name)...” He called out to you as you escaped the room. You glanced back, blushing and giving him a toothy smile in return. Arthur closed the door, mentally obsessing a little over how adorable the exchange was. Quietly, he led you to a room about halfway down the hall on the right. As he opened the door, you noticed that the room was a little smaller than Alfred’s, but considering you had to sleep in a room with tons of other children previously, this was like a mansion.

“Sorry that the room’s so small and empty, love. It was-” He began. You leaped up, hugging your arms around Arthur’s torso gratefully.

“This room’s amazing!! And the bed... it’s so large! And the blankets are so soft!” You added as you crawled onto the bed, wrapping the poofy blankets around yourself. The British man smiled warmly at you, leaning down and kissing your forehead.

“Goodnight, (name).” He murmured affectionately, turning away and flicking off the lights, gently closing the door after him. It didn’t take very long before darkness began to take over, your mind slipping out of consciousness.

Suddenly, you were running. You were back in your tattered clothing as wind battered at your poor, already weak body. Your lungs and body screamed for you to stop and breath, but you were too terrified to stop. As you ran, twigs snapped behind you. Something was following you. The fear was too much, however, so you did everything in your power to not look back. The forest spun around you, growing dizzy due to too much effort. Suddenly, you tripped. You landed flat on your face and began to scramble to get up, when everything grew deathly silent. Not a sound. No wind. No crackling twigs. Only your heartbeat and heavy breath. You waited, too terrified to move. Slowly you turned around. Then, you opened your mouth to scream, when you woke up.

Panting hard, you jolted upright, your eyes popping open as sweat gleamed on your tense body. You looked around you. This was your room... it was just a nightmare! Still, it was dark out and there was no clock to tell you what time it was. Several minutes passed, your breath finally starting to slow. Warily, you spun around and stepped out of the bed, grabbing the doorknob and slowly opening it with a creak. Once again, dead silence. You slid out of the room, the hallway now suddenly looking a hundred times longer and scarier that it did not that long ago.

Swallowing, you stepped out. Right away you began to head for Alfred’s room, your heart beginning to pick up speed again. You stepped slowly and anxiously, occasionally peeking over your shoulder. Your legs began to move faster until it turned into an all out sprint. Finally, you reached the door and bolted inside, slamming the door shut behind you.

“Al?” You squeaked, your voice hoarse. A head popped out of the blankets, blue eyes wide.

“(Name)! Oh, jeez I thought you were Arthur!” He sat up, grinning at you. Beneath the covers, you saw a glowing screen, most likely his DS. You shook still, unable to speak. The blonde boy seemed to notice something was wrong and he frowned with concern.

“Hey, (name), are you alright?” He inquired, looking at you unsurely. You inched forward, reaching the bed and practically jumping into it, wrapping your arms tightly around him. Alfred watched, alarmed by the sudden action.

“A-Al, I had a n-nightmare....” You cried, holding him close. His eyes softened in realization, and he cautiously slid his arms around you as well, not sure of how to comfort you. You sobbed, clenching your fists as tears streamed down your face. He was speechless. Then, an idea popped into his head.

“(Name)!” He exclaimed excitedly. “You can sleep with me tonight!” You jolted away, your (e/c) orbs huge.

“A-Al... are you sure it’s okay?” You stammered. He grinned in response.

“Of course!” Relief swelled over you, and you continued to embrace eachother for just a little longer before you finally broke away, smiling softly.

“Yeah... that sounds nice.” You both laid down, and Al kept his arms around your torso. You nuzzled him affectionately, grateful.

“Thank you, Alfred.” You murmured happily.

“No worries, I’m the hero! I’ll keep you safe... I promise.” He told you, giving your head a kiss. “I promise I’ll always protect you.”
